In 2012 I returned to ham radio after a 20+ year hiatus – life had kept me hopping – with no time to put up antennas or set down radials. So when I returned to the hobby it was like stepping out of a time capsule. While I’d kept up with code (even my ringtone was in code), I hadn’t kept up with technology. And the three biggest changes were computer logging, spotting, and panadapters. Game changers, every one.

But my roots as a Morse op ran deep – so I quickly gravitated to watering holes populated by Morse folk and found groups like FISTS, SKCC. and CWOPS actively promoting Morse. But I encountered astonishing comments – myths – being circulated by earnest, well-meaning people – “experts” even…

Straight keys cause glass arm.”

“Straight keys are too hard to use.”

“Beginners should learn by listening before learning to send… “

Wait… What?

Fragments of fact, distorted by a fun-house mirror, were being dispensed like holy writ.

MorseBusters was born as a concept right there – a play on MythBusters. No myths. Get the facts straight, then deal with that, not what you imagine.

The goal is not to “be” right, but to “get it right.” believe we are making progress.

You are invited to be a “MorseBuster.”

Why go to France for a 5-letter 50-bit word when there’s one right in your own front yard? Samuel F B used it all the time – MORSE – BTW my favorite 50-bit word has just 3 letters – JOY – Thank you WaW

  3. Thanks – I never realized MORSE was 50 bits, nor JOY :-) But PARIS has been the “standard” word used for WPM calculation since the late 1800s. So, while other choices are certainly possible, PARIS cross-references to countless other texts and publications.
